Botox

What Is Botox?

Botox is a purified protein that works by relaxing the dynamic facial muscles that are responsible for facial wrinkles. It is commonly used to treat frown lines, forehead lines and eye wrinkles (crows feet). Botox (Botulinum toxin type A) injections are now recognised as the UK’s number one treatment for facial lines and wrinkles simply because it is safe, quick and straightforward in its effectiveness in removing the signs of aging.

How Does Botox Work?

Small amounts of the purified protein are injected into problematic areas. The natural protein blocks signals at the junction of the muscle and the nerve, thereby reducing muscular contraction. In time, the muscle weakens and the overlying skin relaxes thus reducing or removing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Is It Safe

Yes, it has been approved by the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) for cosmetic use and has been used for over 30 years without any known long-term problems.

Who Can Have The Treatment?

It is suitable for most people apart from women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

Are Botox Injections Painful?

Not really, most people experience no pain. A few will experience mild temporary discomfort.

What Are The Side Effects?

There are minimal side effects associated with Botox treatment. They can include slight bruising at the injection site, headaches and slight temporary drooping of the eyelid.

What Can And Can’t I Do After The Treatment?

Within 4 hours of the treatment people are advised not to do vigorous exercise, drink excessive alcohol or lie down flat. Otherwise life can carry on as normal.

When Will I See A Difference?

It starts to work in about 3-5 days.

How Long Will It Last?

3-6 months depending on each individual’s own response. Repeat treatments have been shown to last longer.
